Day against Child Labor. This year, CARE in Indonesia calls for
attention to help returning the child laborer to school and is
dedicating the day for the child laborers particularly those who reside
and work in Tangerang District and City of Banten Province, Indonesia.
In this day, the child laborers would be able to enjoy freedom,
happiness and relief themselves from sorrow and any form of
exploitation and discrimination.
Gland, Switzerland , 26/5/2010 -- Leading environmental and humanitarian organizations are calling for efforts to combat climate change through halting deforestation to take full account of impacts on forest peoples and species.
CARE and WWF made the call as country delegates head to Oslo for Thursday’s Climate and Forest Conference to ensure that any efforts to combat climate change by reducing forest loss take into account impacts on people and the environment.

CARE is working to prevent and lessen sexual violence in the aftermath of Haiti’s devastating earthquake.
Incidents of rape and violence against women were high even before the
earthquake, and rates of attacks have increased in previous disasters
in Haiti, said Janet Meyers, CARE’s Senior Advisor for Sexual and
Reproductive Health in Emergencies.

The coastline of Indonesia was closest to the epicenter of the
earthquake that triggered the tsunami, and more than half of the
resulting deaths occurred in Indonesia. CARE was among the leading humanitarian agencies that responded to the tsunami, and we have continued to work with affected communities over the past five years to reconstruct homes and livelihoods and promote economic and social development.

rape cases have been brought to justice and no one has been convicted

Heavy fighting between Government forces and the LTTE in the Northern
Sri Lankan region of the Vanni has resulted in death and injury to
civilians trapped in the area. The escalation of hostilities between the Government and the LTTE in recent days has significantly increased the number of civilian injuries and
deaths due to the fighting.
Gaza, Occupied Palestinian Territory , 31/12/2008 --
Three CARE cargo trucks carrying life-saving medical supplies to Gaza
were granted permission to enter the beleaguered territory late last
night, one of the few transports to access the area since the Israeli
bombardment of Gaza began Dec. 27. More supplies are urgently needed to
treat wounded civilians. CARE calls for an immediate ceasefire and
unfettered humanitarian access.

CARE International is implementing emergency measures to prevent the
spread of cholera during food distributions in Zimbabwe, where an
epidemic has killed more than 746 people and infected nearly 16,000.

Sexual violence in the DR Congo has reached “epidemic proportions”, and the new wave of heavy fighting is putting tens of thousands more women and young girls at risk, says CARE. In Ethiopia, at least 6.4 million people need emergency food aid. In Somalia, nearly half the population is slowly starving, and the country is facing a food crisis unseen since the famine of the early 1990s. The forecasted tidal flood in Jakarta and its surrounding areas have
impacted thousands of people living in the coastal areas in north of
Jakarta and Tangerang. The water level before peak time reached the
height of an adult waist in Dadap village, Tangerang, Banten. Despite
the condition, only few from a total 1,000 household living in the area
were voluntarily relocated to a safer place.
Geneva, 5/5/2008 -- CARE is cooperating with the UN and Myanmar government authorities to assess the destruction from Tropical Cyclone Nargis, and is prepared to respond with immediate aid. Myanmar’s state-owned television and radio reported that 4,000 people died in the storm which struck Myanmar on Saturday. Nearly 3,000 more have been listed as missing, and the final death toll could go much higher.

disproportionately affect women. When disasters strike, women typically
have less cash savings, lower levels of education and smaller social
networks to draw upon than men.

supplies to people in crisis-stricken Tajikistan with new funding from
the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the
UK Department for International Development (DFID). A severe energy
crisis combined with the harshest winter in 30 years has left millions
of people in Tajikistan facing food and fuel shortages.

CARE International is accelerating its response to humanitarian
suffering and damage in Madagascar caused by Cyclone Ivan that struck
the small country a week ago. One of the most important tasks is
locating and bringing food to the poorest and most marginalized people
in remote villages.

Kenya faces a prolonged food crisis, warned CARE International today,
and urgent action is needed in the next two weeks to prevent its worst
effects.
Dashanbe, Tajikistan, 7/2/2008 --
A severe energy crisis combined with the harshest winter in 30 years
has left millions of people in Tajikistan facing food and fuel
shortages, and the situation is expected to worsen in the coming weeks,
CARE warns. The same severe weather and heavy snowfall that crippled
neighboring China has left parts of Tajikistan, a poor country of just
seven million people, without heat or water in temperatures that are
dropping to -25C at night.

CARE continues to provide water purifying solution to respond to the
urgent need for clean water in Ngawi, one of the districts heavily
affected by the recent floods in East Java. One thousand packages of
hygiene kits, 1,000 jerry cans and 60,000 sachets of water purifying
solution (PUR) have been distributed to 1,000 families in Kwadungan
district, Ngawi.

In response to wide-spread floods and landslides in East and Central
Java, CARE has distributed 1,200 sachets of water purifying solution to
affected families in four sub sub-districts in Central Java. The
distribution was done in connection with a rapid assessment conducted
by a CARE Emergency team in Solo, Central Java with support from
KOMPIP, a local NGO.

One month after cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh, 8.9 million people are
still in urgent need of shelter, safe water and food. They also require
new sources of income as shrimp farms and rice paddies have been
contaminated with salty water and ruined.

Ten years after the Kyoto Protocol was signed, negotiators at the U.N.
Climate Change Summit are finally addressing two crucial issues that
have been neglected until now: how to move forward on financial support
for adaptation to climate change, and how to reduce the carbon emitted
from deforestation. Both have critical implications for the
livelihoods and well-being of poor communities.

On the World AIDS day, Dec 1, CARE International Indonesia in Banda
Aceh is involved in a series of activities of commemoration. A
collaboration of international and local non governmental
organizations, including CARE, the American Red Cross, CWS and MAP,

Indonesian AIDS Commission) have planned various activities.
With Bangladesh reeling in the aftermath of Cyclone Sidr, CARE

People in isolated communities on the Caribbean
coast of Nicaragua are running out of food nearly a week after
Hurricane Felix hit the region. The Miskito people, most of whom live
from subsistence farming, lost crucial rice, corn, bean and yucca crops
in the flood waters.

Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 22/8/2007 --
CARE is finishing its GRIYO project by delivering training on how to
improve GRIYO houses for the beneficiaries, members of the community
who were affected by the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Central Java last
year. The training is being conducted for one week, starting from the
20th to 24th of August 2007 in Brangkal village, Klaten, East Java. This
event also serves as a closing ceremony of the GRIYO project that has
been serving the community for the past eight months.
Atlanta, US, 16/8/2007 -- In the wake of a massive 8.0-magnitude earthquake that rocked Peru on Wednesday evening, three CARE teams have been dispatched to affected areas to assess the damage and immediate needs of survivors. CARE staff has already distributed emergency supplies -- clean water, tools, medicine and blankets already on hand -- to some 200 affected families in Chincha and Tambo de Mora, two of the communities most severely affected by the earthquake.
