Challenges As one of the poorest province in Indonesia, East Nusa Tenggara Timur is experiencing long-lasting food insecurity and high rate of acute malnutrition. Enduring drought has caused crop failures leading to an acute food security crisis at household level. As a result, significant reduced food intake occurred, leading to deteriorating nutritional of the people, particularly children under five years of age.
The health and nutrition survey conducted jointly by CARE, Church World Services (CWS) and Helen Keller International (HKI) in late 2007 in western part of Timor island in East Nusa Tenggara province, revealed alarming rates of acute malnutrition among children under five in Kupang, Timur Tengah Selatan, Timur Tengah Utara, and Belu districts.
CARE’s Response The one-year WFP-funded project aims to improve the nutritional status of children under five and elementary students in Timor Tengah Utara district. The goals of the program are: • to decrease the malnutrition prevalence amongst children under five, elementary school students, pregnant and lactating women though the local integrated health post. • to increase the knowledge of the pregnant and lactating women and caretaker in good practice and behavior in relation to child’s nutrition • to improve the students’ learning capacity and concentration during their classes at schools • to improve the students knowledge on personal hygiene and nutritious food in targeted schools.
The activities are held in 125 villages, 171 elementary schools, 264 Posyandus in 15 sub-districts in Timor Tengah Utara (TTU) district, East Nusa Tenggara.
